How does an apheresis treatment work? Learn all about Vita-Pherese in Mallorca: from the virtually pain-free procedure to cell regeneration.
A Guide to the Treatment Process
For many patients with chronic conditions, the decision to undergo extracorporeal blood purification is a crucial step toward recovery. While the first part of our series focused on medical indications, this technical report is devoted to the practical implementation of the procedure. A clear understanding of the process is the foundation for trust and therapeutic success.
With over 40 years of expertise, we guide patients through a procedure that combines modern medical technology with biophysical regulation.
What happens during apheresis?
Apheresis therapy is a technical procedure in which blood is purified outside the body in a closed circuit. Blood is continuously drawn through an access point—usually in the veins of the arm—and passed through a special filtration system.
At our practice, we use the specialized vita-pherese® procedure for this purpose. In this process, blood plasma is separated from the solid components (cells) and passed through highly selective filters. These filters are designed to specifically bind harmful substances—such as microclots, autoantibodies, or environmental toxins—and remove them from the circulatory system. The purified blood is then immediately returned to the body. The immune system remains unaffected, while the toxic burden is significantly reduced.
Is the apheresis procedure painful?
One of the most common concerns relates to pain during treatment. In general, apheresis therapy is relatively painless and is well tolerated by most patients. The only moment that may be briefly perceived as uncomfortable is the venipuncture at the beginning, which is comparable to a routine blood draw or blood donation.
During the actual cleaning phase, which takes place while the patient is lying down or in a relaxed semi-seated position, patients generally do not feel any pain. Since this is an extracorporeal procedure, the blood temperature is kept constant, so patients do not feel cold.
How do you feel after apheresis?
Individual responses after a session may vary, as they depend heavily on the patient’s initial condition and the amount of toxins eliminated. Many patients report “mental clarity” and noticeable physical relief immediately after treatment, especially for symptoms such as brain fog.
However, it is also completely normal to feel some fatigue or a slight sense of exhaustion during the first 24 to 48 hours. This is a sign that the body’s regulatory system is at work. To optimally support this process, we follow up with frequency therapy. This helps the cells regain their energetic balance after the mechanical cleansing and accelerates regeneration.
How long does an apheresis procedure take?
The duration of a session varies from person to person and depends, among other things, on blood flow rate and the chosen cleansing method. On average, patients should plan on spending about 2 to 4 hours for a complete treatment, including preparation and follow-up care.
During this time, patients are continuously monitored by our experienced medical staff. The relaxed atmosphere at our locations in Mallorca helps ensure that this time is often perceived as a respite from the daily routine of therapy.
What are the side effects of apheresis?
Apheresis therapy is considered a very safe and well-established procedure. However, as with any medical procedure, side effects may occur. The most common—and usually harmless—reactions include:
• Hematomas:
Mild bruising at the injection sites.
• Temporary fatigue:
A result of metabolic changes.
• Mild circulatory fluctuations:
These may occur during therapy but are immediately corrected through medical monitoring and electrolyte replacement.
Serious complications are extremely rare thanks to our high technological standards and our medical director's decades of experience.
